02/01/2012 - LEAP YEAR FAIR ADMISSION SEASON PASS Another Leap Year is upon us, and so is the popular Central Washington State Fair “Leap Year Special” which allows the public the opportunity to purchase a season pass into the Fair for one very fair price during the month of February. This year the special Leap Year pass is just $40. The pass gets the holder into the Fair every day of the 10-day long event. The pass is a photo ID admission badge and is intended for the person whose picture is on the badge. They are non-transferable.
The Leap Year Special badge is only available for purchase from February 1 through February 29, and can be purchased at the State Fair Park Box Office, at www.fairfun.com or through TicketsWest.
“Our Leap Year special allows folks a chance to come out and enjoy our Fair for as low as $4 a day,” said Fair president Greg Stewart. “It is the best admission deal of the whole Fair.”
Because fair time entertainment is free to all fairgoers, the ID badge is also good for general admission seating at the concerts and grandstand shows during the Fair. The special Leap Year photo ID badge is good for all ages. Kids 5 and under are always free. These passes are strictly for admission to the Fair itself and do not include carnival rides or parking. A voucher will be given to those who purchase the special season photo ID, and they will have their photo taken and badge made just prior to the Fair in September.
Those interested in purchasing season passes must do so between Wednesday, February 1 and Wednesday, February 29 at the State Fair Park Box Office, 1301 S. Fair Avenue, Yakima. To order by fax or mail, please download the application from the Fair website, www.fairfun.com, by clicking on “What’s New” on the home page. To order via TicketsWest call 800-325-SEAT or go to www.ticketswest.com. For those purchasing through TicketsWest, service fees may apply.
The 2012 Fair runs from September 21 through September 30 in Yakima.

03/25/2012 - The Righteous Mother, presented by the League of Women Voters of Yakima County The Righteous Mothers are four funny, philosophical female musicians who have been a noted Northwest performing group for over 26 years. They use humor and their original tunes to address comtemporary political, cultural and personal topics. Their performances routinely elicit tears and laughter and effect audience members so personally that it is not unusual to hear comments such as 'this is the best therapy I've had in years' and 'I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard'. Pulling from folk, jazz, gospel, country and rock n' roll genres, a Righteous Mothers concert is unforgettably fun.

03/30/2012 - Yakima Arts Commission Holding Logo Design Contest A little more than two years ago, the Yakima Arts Commission was established by the Yakima City Council to expand public art in the community while also improving access to the visual and performing arts for residents and visitors alike. Now, the commission is itself looking for some visual art to help it achieve its mission.
Earlier this month, the commission launched a contest to find a logo that will help enhance the visibility and increase the promotion of art in Yakima.
The logo design contest is open to all high school students in the Yakima and West Valley school districts as well as those currently attending Yakima Valley Community College and Perry Technical Institute.
“We plan on using the winning logo design on signs, banners, announcements, stationary, and so on,” said Andrew Granitto, exhibitions curator at the Yakima Valley Museum and a member of the Arts Commission. “The logo will serve as a signature image for the commission.”
All logo design contest entries need to be submitted by Friday, March 30th at
5:00 pm. The entries have to be submitted through the official logo design contest website at http://www.ci.yakima.wa.us/council/board/yac/contest/. File size is limited to 15mb per submission. Designs need to be submitted either as a vector file or as a pdf.
The guidelines for Yakima Arts Commission logo design contest submissions include:
- Designs may include variations of the same logo
- Logo designs need to include the name “Yakima Arts Commission”
- Designs must be submitted in both color and black and white (gray scale optional)
- Designs must work well in both large size and small size
- A design must be the original work of the student submitting it
The winning design will be unveiled during a Yakima City Council meeting this summer. The winning designer will receive a proclamation from the City Council, tickets to events sponsored by each of the commission’s represented agencies (Allied Arts, Larson Gallery, the Capitol Theatre, The Seasons, Yakima Valley Museum, Yakima Symphony), and will be identified in various media releases announcing the winning logo design.
“We’re excited to be able to give young, local graphic artists an opportunity to demonstrate their talent through the logo design contest,” said Granitto. “It’s another step in the commission’s efforts to foster art and artists in Yakima.”
